Guatemalan President José Maria Reina Barrios profoundly transformed his capital of Guatemala City with new schools, buildings, churches, theaters alongside wide Parisian-style avenues. He opened his country to the world at the 1897 exhibition but was assassinated the following year. Most of his building disappeared during the 1917-1918 earthquake.
