"This poster concerns only the equestrian sports. For health reasons - quarantine being imposed on the admittance of animals into Australia - the equestrian events could not take place in Melbourne. The Swedish artist drew inspiration from one of the sculptures of the Parthenon, brought back from Greece by the British diplomat, Lord Elgin, to symbolise the link between the ancient and modern games."
